North Devon Council’s Planning Committee has today granted Conditional Planning Approval to Habitat First Group to develop the former Venn Quarry into new holiday homes and a hotel near Barnstaple, North Devon.
The new site is expected to create 100 jobs during development, as well as additional customer service and maintenance roles following completion. The 63-hectare site is also expected to generate £3.9million a year for the local economy from visitor spend.
The new site, called Birchwood Lakes, will be developed by Habitat First Group into 158 one, two, three, and four-bedroom cabins and lodges and a 40-bedroom hotel near Barnstaple. The former quarry, which ceased operation in 2006, will also be restored into a beautiful nature reserve.
Birchwood Lakes will offer world-class nature conservation alongside the sustainable holiday accommodation and represents an exemplary scheme within the North Devon Biosphere reserve, whose purpose is to harmonise development with the natural environment. Habitat First Group has successfully achieved this at two other UK projects based in the Cotswolds and Dorset, both of which are former quarries.Back to news
